FIRST AID TRAINING - a group approach

Two groups of field volunteers were trained last week in first aid by Susan Stevens of First In Sports FirstAid. This training was made possible by a Friends of Parks Volunteer and Visitor Programs grant to the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network (KIWN) Friends of Parks group and a Landcare Led Bushfire Recovery grant to KI Conservation Landowners Association (KICLA).
KIWN President Katie Welz and Associate Professor Topa Petit, of the University of South Australia, identified a need for first-aid training among a group of collaborating organisations involved in the KIWN and KICLA field projects, some of which are co-led by Dr Petit.
“It is difficult and expensive to bring trainers over, and we are grateful to Susan, the Landscape Board and the CWA for use of facilities, the grant organisations, and the volunteers who hosted and fed Susan” said Mrs. Welz. “We are really pleased to be building capacity in the community.”
“The KICLA research projects on bats, pygmy-possums, grass-trees, and more are field-work intensive, often in remote locations.” added Dr Petit. “This training improves the safety of participants, but also that of the community at large. It was superbly organised by Katie, and the trainees all had a good time.”
KICLA chair Peter Martin agrees: “Susan was engaging, covered the material thoroughly, and everyone feels more prepared now. It has been a busy year for KICLA and our partners, and it’s a nice way to end it on a positive note, although our research continues during the holiday break.”

KIWN is pleased to announce that we have recently purchased a parcel of land on the Dudley Peninsula, on the eastern end of Kangaroo Island with the intention of protecting and preserving the flora and fauna of the area. The decision to purchase this parcel of land was based largely on its position relative to other conservation areas and its high ecological values. To read Dr Richard Glatz's report click here.

Little Penguin Nesting Module collaborative project began 2021 with the installation & monitoring of clay penguin burrows in the Emu Bay Penguin Colony - partners include Flinders University, Adelaide University, Jane Bamford(ceramicist) & KIWN

Steve Parish - Life behind a Lens masterclass and workshop was a great success in October 2018.
In May 2018 the bushfire survival plan workshop was held at Stokes Bay.
Our 2017 AGM was held on Saturday January 20th 2018 at D'estrees Bay. We had guest speakers Richard Glatz and Janine Mackintosh give a presentation.
August 11th - 13th - We had the amazing team from Philip Island come to Kangaroo Island to hold an Introduction to Oiled Wildlife Response workshop which had great response!
May 2017 - Our president presented a talk to schools on what we do, who we are and the plight on the Pigmy Possums heavily affected by feral cats on Kangaroo Island.
May 2017 - We participated in the local farmers market Mothers Day raffle, donating a baby romper along with our Logo and car sticker.
New Years Day 2017 - Music and Art at Boomerbank event held at Pelican Lagoon.
December 2016 - Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network AGM.
September 2016 - How to help injured wildlife information session held in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island.
July 2016 - A Wildlife Rescue TAFE course was held on Kangaroo Island for Network members.
January 2016 - A fundraiser was held at the Hanson Bay Sanctuary with a talk by our President on the first 24-48 hours for Wildlife Rescue followed by a presentation on the Flight of the Pelican by Indiana James.
December 2015 - Our annual general meeting had a great turn out by carers who enjoyed an interesting presentation on the life of the Echidna by world renowned expert, Peggy Rismiller.
May 2015 - A workshop of when, why and how to euthanise injured or sick animals encountered on the roadside was presented alongside a talk of natural remedies available for wildlife carers. We also had a talk on common problems encountered with captive reptiles and amphibians and a demonstration on first aid for birds
January 2015 - The Native Animal Network from South Australia presented a beginners workshop on wildlife rescue, care and rehabilitation.
